Sophie Brown

WRITER & FILM PROGRAMMER

Sophie Brown is a film programmer and writer.

With a specialism in non-fiction cinema, she is a documentary programme advisor for the BFI London Film Festival, reviews documentary funding applications for the Sundance Institute, and has written festival coverage, interviews and reviews for outlets including Dazed & Confused, Sight & Sound and The Quietus. She was the Artists’ Moving Image, Experimental and Thriller programmer for several years at Aesthetica Short Film Festival, and Associate Programmer of Bertha DocHouse 2018-2019.

She has also worked on projects with the British Council Film Team, coordinating and curating international programmes and tours.

Her personal programming projects have included a nationwide tour of the films of Shirley Clarke, a very rare cinema screening of Point Break, and developing Brighton’s independent film exhibition community. Her programming banner Bijou Electric Empire Forever is from the name of one of Brighton’s long-gone cinemas.

Doctooth is a Tinyletter project of essays that explore themes of non-fiction cinema. She is currently teaching writing & visual culture at The New School in NYC.
